Redefining Happiness

What is true happiness? Is it holding a newborn baby? or is it walking down the aisle to marry the love of your life? What if you finally get that dream job that you have been earnestly praying for? Or is it just coming home tired to a peaceful home?

What does it truly mean to be happy?

We all harbor ideas in our minds about what will bring us happiness, but I’m here to share that true happiness is:

Where love is.

Where there is God, there is love, because God is love. 1 John 4:8 Love and God are intertwined; genuine love for others cannot exist without love for God.

When we invite God into our spaces, the ambiance becomes filled with love.
In places where love exists, joy and happiness are present. We can only grow closer to each other when we draw nearer to God.

Inviting God into our families will bring happiness to our homes, communities, and the entire nation.

Love, particularly within a family, can be the greatest source of happiness. The hymn below exemplifies this truth:

Furaha I nyumbani, panapo pendo:
(Happiness at home, where there is love)
Hapana machukizo, panapo pendo;
(No sorrow, where there is love)
Chakula ni kitamu, mashamba yasitawi,
(Food is delicious, fields flourish)
Maisha ni kamili, panapo pendo
(Life is complete, where there is love

Happiness is where love ( God) is.

Prioritizing God

We have long embraced the ‘Do what makes you happy‘ philosophy. How many times have you done what makes you happy and ended up unhappy in the long run?

What if we instead embraced the ‘Do what makes God happy’ philosophy?

You will only find happiness if you earnestly seek to honor and glorify God in all your ways.

The consciousness that you are doing things that God can approve will fill you with peace and serenity.

Those who, in everything, make God first, last, and best are the happiest people in the world.

Putting your hope in the Lord

Where does your help come from? From your friends, your children? or maybe your spouse.

When things are crumbling down, who is your hope? Who will help you? Happy are you if the God who made heaven and earth is your deliverer. Why? He is mighty to save. He will delight you, quiet you with his love, and rejoice over you with singing. (Zephaniah 3:17)

Growing up, we used to sing this song:

I am happy today.
so happy,
In Jesus name,
I am happy because
he has taken away,
my sins away,
I am happy so
happy today

The Bible says that if we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive and cleanse us from all our unrighteousness (1 John 1:9) Why should you suffer with that sin that is robbing you of joy when forgiveness is free? Our loving savior not only forgives but also gives you the power to overcome that sin.

Happiness is when Jesus takes away your sins.

Happiness is when we hurt someone, yet they choose to forgive us wholeheartedly, treating us with kindness as if our mistake never happened.

When we forgive each other, we experience happiness.

I know you might be wondering why this point. How do happiness and endurance fall into the same sentence? Well, let’s see what the Bible says:

We count Job as a happy man because he remained faithful during the trial, and we saw how the Lord rewarded him.

Happy are you who have endured trials, for you will develop a persevering spirit that will perfect your journey to heaven.

To add on that, you shall receive the crown of life, which God has promised those who love him. ( James 1:12)

Remember that the sufferings in this world are nothing compared to the glory that will be revealed to us. (Romans 8:18)

Happy are you who endure.

The Bottom Line

True happiness is loving and prioritizing your creator, putting your hope in Him, and experiencing forgiveness. Lastly, happiness is the enduring trial of this life as we wait for blessed hope. Happiness is the Lord.

  1. Man’s pursuit of happiness will only bring emptiness, desperation, and more gloom if Christ is not so wounded in the course. He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him.
Thank you for your beautiful reminders, my friend,
    God bless you.
