Let The Thorns Alone

Why do you always choose to gather all the unpleasant recollections of your past life, its iniquities, and disappointments? Why do we find it effortless to internalize and fixate on negative statements about ourselves? What prompts us to envision things that might go wrong when we think about the future?

While ministering in Europe, a woman went to Ellen and requested that she pray for her. She was battling with discouragement. Later that day, Ellen had a vision where she saw a beautiful garden with a gardener. Ellen was gathering flowers and enjoying the sweet smell of the roses, lilies, and pinks. Suddenly, she saw the girl crying, saying, “Why are thorns in such a beautiful garden?” But the gardener came to her and said, “Let the thorns alone, for they will wound you. Gather the roses, lilies, and pinks.

This woman is some of us today. Beautiful flowers surround us, but it always seems easy to focus on the thorns. Why do we embrace thorns that bruise us instead of appreciating the colorful and radiant flowers around us?

Dear sister, please let the thorns alone.

It is not the will of God

God sees and sympathizes with you every day. Why do you carry all that weight when He has told you to cast all your burdens on him? Why did you not come to him when he said, “Come all who labor and are heavy-laden…”Do you not desire rest? (Matthew 11:28)Did you know that it is not the will of God that you should be weighed down like that?

Dear brother, Let the thorns alone; it is the will of God.

He knows

Why do you always entertain the deception that you can battle with things alone? Have you forgotten that our high priest (Jesus Christ) was tempted in all points as we are yet without sin? (Hebrews 4:15) He encountered betrayal by his closest friends, physical suffering on the cross, emotional suffering at Gethsemane, and even mocking from his people. But his focus was on the price—the joy set before him (Hebrews 12:2), the joy of our salvation.

Let the thorns alone; He knows.

You are valuable

Look at the birds of the air, they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they ?

Matthew 6:26

If God cares enough to provide for birds that neither sow nor reap, what about you? Do you know how valuable you are to God? To understand your true worth, consider the cost paid to redeem you. You are worth more than silver or gold. It cost God the precious blood of His son to save you. (1Peter1:18)

How will he who spared not His son but gave him up for us all, not along with Him, freely give us all things?

Let the thorns alone, for you are valuable.

Remember to remember

One of the main reasons why we dwell on the thorns of worry and discouragement is that we forget. We forgot the beautiful flowers of the past victories won by God. We erase the fragrance of the wonderful words of life from our memory.

With our memory erased, our vision is also blurred, hence the focus on the thorns instead of the flowers.

Dear one, you have nothing to fear for the future except that you will forget the way the Lord has led you and his teaching in the past.

Take time today and remember the following:

  • The tears wiped,
  • The sins overcome,
  • The anxiety removed,
  • The fears dispelled,
  • The blessings bestowed

Let the thorns alone; remember to remember.

The essence

In the garden of life, God, in his infinite love, has planted roses of his promises, lilies of his dealings with us in the past, and pinks of his assurances. The enemy has also planted thorns in the garden.

It is now left for you to choose. First, choose roses; then, gather lilies, and collect all the pinks you can get. However, let the thorns alone.
